LIGHT SPEAKS’ is the first solo exhibition of Coolum-based artist Karina Seljak, which aims to reflect the sentience of land through colour and form. Experiences living on the Sunshine Coast and visiting high-altitude regions of Northern Argentina are transformed into saturated vessels and mountainscapes. Animated by the transition spaces of dawn and dusk, places often seen as ‘natural resources’ take on an esse of their own.

By drawing with loose pigments, Karina follows her curiosity about sensing spirits in land – and how her perceptions may change as environmental and climatic shifts accelerate. Presented with dualities of form and emptiness, groundedness and suspension, viewers can expect to be immersed in a journey of elemental wonder.

LIGHT SPEAKS is supported by ProjectWLD, an initiative of Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts & Heritage Levy. Artist development is supported by the Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation Gifted program.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Karina Seljak is an emerging artist based on Gubbi Gubbi / Kabi Kabi Country (Sunshine Coast) whose drawings investigate colour relationships and ephemerality, and deal with notions of universal balance. Blending soft pastels into luminous visions of intimate and expansive scale allows Karina to bring form to unseen energies and contemplate disappearing ecologies.
