OTHER VISIONS

20 May – 10 June, 2024

Official opening: Saturday 25th May, 4-6 pm

Traversing timelines and the exploring the significance of place, Backhaus-Smith aims to connect the audience to his personal appreciation of the land with his new exhibition “OTHER VISIONS”.

Considered through the lens of history, a landscape seen for the first time by the earliest peoples, and later by European voyagers, the artist was drawn to the idea of ‘other visions’ of the striking landscape known as The Glasshouse Mountains – the collection of rugged, volcanic peaks located on the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Join the artist in the gallery on Saturday 25th May, 4-6 pm to celebrate the official opening of this exhibition

An online exhibition catalogue is now available. Please contact the gallery by email to request a copy.

Rex Backhaus-Smith is one of Queensland’s most celebrated and accomplished contemporary artists. This latest collection of works, ‘OTHER VISIONS’ features largely new and selected pieces capturing the ancient landscape of the Glass House Mountains, and the flora and fauna of the south-east Queensland region.

Rex Backhaus-Smith is one of Queensland’s most celebrated and accomplished contemporary artists. Backhaus-Smith spent his early years in western Queensland, and a deep connection to and passion for this rugged Australian landscape and the wildlife of the outback was forged here. As an Australian artist he displays an exciting and individual facet of watercolour painting, interpreting the colours and forms of a compelling landscape.

Backhaus-Smith is a professional artist of international standing. Throughout his painting career Backhaus-Smith has had more than 15 overseas study tours which have included many of Europe’s major art centres. Since 1961, he has had over 50+ solo exhibitions and participated in over 75 group and joint exhibitions, both within Australia and internationally, with major Australian exhibitions held in Brisbane, Canberra, Caloundra, Noosa and Maleny.

Some 30 of his paintings have been reproduced as collectible prints. Bodley Head of London commissioned him to do a series of Australiana. In association with John Keeble Winn, he has published a series of 5 limited edition books and has authored a number of his own also. The most recent publication pertaining to his extensive career, “Rex Backhaus-Smith: An Artist’s Journey” was written by Dr Jill Brannock.
