‘This collection of recent paintings comprises abstracted landscapes and occasional human-made forms. It explores my preoccupation with atmospheric and geographic shapes, and the temperaments of light. My process relies on gathering an internal collection of images which are not only seen, but felt. A driving residual memory then leads the painting, informed by colour, tone, brushwork and temporal references, which allow memory to move into ‘being’. Paintings become versions, inventions, extractions that also express an internal landscape. Presence and absence, the known and unknown interact within this space.’

TONY COLES

Award winning local artist Tony Coles has exhibited widely throughout Australia and overseas, including Brazil and Bolivia.

A recurring subject for the artist is the dynamic meeting place of landform and sea. This virtual place is where visions both real and imagined are reconstructed. The balancing of elemental forms such as headlands, clouds and hills and the ever-changing light conditions inform Tony’s work. The mystery of creating a visual language is what intrigues him.

Tony has said of his work, ‘Often I just have to let the painting tell me what to do, it’s an intuitive process.’
