Artist Statement

An important part of my art practice is working plein air – walking, scribbling on paper and canvas; experiencing the change of seasons first hand and the viewing the colour palettes of earth, sky and foliage. I like to make mental snapshots of the shadows and textures but I also like to connect with the emotional experience nature shares with us.

It is this process that allows uninhibited marks to move across the surface. I often construct imagery I can see within the landscape; patterns on the trees and shapes in the sky. I will ponder for a while… considering space and connection. I return to the studio to view and if needed resolve my work. There is no need to smooth over the time spent arriving, the journey is there for the telling.
